Official Recruit Video

Prospective Student-Athletes for the University of Minnesota Spirit Squad are strongly encouraged to submit an official recruitment video. The video will help the coaching staff make an informed decision about the type of student-athlete that you are in order to offer an official Letter of Intent for a roster spot on the 2024-2025 team. The video is not expected to be professionally produced. iPhone videos are perfectly acceptable, as long as we are able to see you. All skills performed in the video must be current and are expected to be within your abilities upon your first practice with the University of Minnesota. The suggested guidelines for the video are listed below.

0:30 – 1:00: Introduction

Use this time and introduce and talk about yourself. While the skills are important, we need to also know that you are comfortable speaking about yourself. As a Minnesota Cheerleader, you will talk to fans, alumni, and donors on a consistent basis. It is important that you have the confidence to hold conversations and speak unprompted.

0:15 – 0:45: Standing and Running Tumbling

We want to see a standing tuck, and a round off-handspring-full. Additionally, any standing series from handspring is encouraged (Ex: handspring-handspring-layout, handspring-handspring-full, standing full). Any specialty running passes ending in a full are a bonus as well (Ex: arabians, whips, etc.). All tumbling should be performed on dead mat. If you are working on a skill that you have not brought to dead mat yet, you may also show that on spring floor or tumble track, but please indicate which surface you are performing the skill on.

0:30 – 1:30: Stunting

We would like to see solid technique with different gameday skills (extensions, liberties, cupies, full-ups) in the position that you are trying out for. If you have any elite skills (round off ups, back handspring ups, hand-in-hands, other spinning skills, etc.), we would like to see those as well. Please indicate what your preferred position is and show as many different skills as possible in that position. If you believe that you could be successful in multiple positions (ex: trying out as a top girl, but can side base as well), please show that also.

Expectations in stunting vary. We understand that everyone works with partners with different ability levels. We are focused on watching your technique. Difficulty does not mean much if your execution is poor.

Videos should be uploaded to YouTube or Google Drive, and a link to the video can be emailed directly to Coach Dan Weaver at dweave@umn.edu.

High School Transcript

Please submit your current high school transcript for review to the coaching staff. If you are a transfer student, please submit your most recent college transcript.

A copy can be emailed directly to Coach Dan Weaver at dweave@umn.edu.

Letter of Recommendation

While your skills as an athlete are important, we are more interested in learning about your character as a person. We are looking for people that we can trust to uphold the standards of our program.

Your Letter of Recommendation should come from a coach that knows you very well. This person should be willing and able to vouch for your work-ethic and character. Letters can be emailed directly from your coach to Coach Dan Weaver at dweave@umn.edu.
